Audiometric (hearing) testing in WA.

Who needs hearing tests, how often, and what to do with the results.

Last reviewed: October 2026

Who needs testing?

Under regulation 58 of the WA Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 — with matching requirements for mines — audiometric testing must be provided to workers who are frequently required to wear hearing protection to protect them from noise.

When

  • within three months of the worker starting that work
  • then at least every two years

Who can do it

Testing must be done by a competent person with the training and experience to perform the test, interpret the results and present them so the workplace can make good decisions.

Records

Keep audiometric test results for at least two years, and give the worker a copy.

Practical tips

  • Get a baseline test early — it is the comparison point for every future test.
  • Use results to check whether noise controls and hearing protection are actually working.
  • Hearing protection is the last line of defence — look at quieter plant, enclosures and exposure time first.
